About the Craft & the Artisans

The paisley motif — known in Kashmiri craft as kairi or buta — is one of the oldest and most distinctly Kashmiri design elements in the embroidery tradition. Its teardrop form, believed to represent a mango or a cypress tree depending on the cultural interpretation, has been part of Kashmir's craft vocabulary for centuries. Combining it with floral motifs in the same garment reflects a design confidence — the understanding that two classic elements can coexist in the same piece without competing. The craft takes its name from the aari, a fine hooked needle historically used to draw thread through fabric in continuous chain-stitch loops.

The motifs on every piece in the Novbahar Collection were designed by artisans based in the Kashmir Valley — craftspeople carrying this design knowledge forward across generations. The embroidery is produced in Kashmir and each co-ord set is stitched and finished there — ensuring the creative and economic value of this craft stays rooted in the community that created it.
