About the Craft & the Artisans

The neckline panel on this kaftan is among the most technically demanding pieces in the Novbahar Collection. Dense Kashmiri Aari embroidery — where motifs are interlocked without visible ground fabric between them — requires the artisan to maintain consistent stitch tension across the entire composition while building the design element by element: the rose clusters first, then the paisley forms that fill the spaces between, then the fine leaf detailing that closes every remaining gap, and finally the scrolling vine that frames the outer edge. A single inconsistency in tension distorts the relationship between neighbouring motifs. The charcoal thread on off-white ground amplifies every decision — there is no base colour complexity to absorb imprecision.

The back medallion is worked in the same charcoal thread — a self-contained paisley composition that reflects the artisan's understanding of how a garment should be considered from every angle, not only the front.
